Turns out my contact was available today. So I got a chance to check out Dark Vengeance and re-read Dead Shark Island. This isn't the place for detailed reviews. But while Fernando could never produce a bad comic, I had strong impressions of both.
-# I found Dark Vengeance very... one note to be honest. It's essentially a bunch of black convicts taking vengeance on a judge using his daughters. As best I could tell that's all. The scenarios involved in the sex are pleasantly outlandish. But I honestly found much of it hard to read in detail. (It's not fair of me, but I find the elements involving the father very hard to read.)
-# Dead Shark Island left a much more positive impression. The scenarios might not be as crazy. But the setting, narrative and characters are a lot stronger. The old man has some competition in the form of Megan. And there's that looming sense of isolation over a clearly evolving story. It's great stuff.
Very impressed with your keen eye, luckarusky. You're spot-on in describing the current titles I'm drawing. Of all the current series I'm maintaining, Dark Vengeance is the one I don't plan on doing as involved a story as the others. It's just my way of keeping these titles sufficiently different from each other so I don't get bored doing something that will start to feel too familiar. DV is the comic I draw when I just feel like showing relentless sex/humilation/etc. It will eventually lead into some major plot developments but they won't be too complex (kinda like the CHEERLEADERS series, I suppose). It just can't stay in the same setting forever.
It also explains why I mostly alternate between these titles, since I probably would be bored if I did two titles of a series in quick succession (though I did that in 2010 with SEX WARS and DEAD SHARK). It helps to take long breaks between installments.
DEAD SHARK ISLAND was sort of a gamble -- a slower-paced story with Hollywood influences. Unfortunately it hasn't sold as well as I wanted. And so it may be some time before I make the 3rd part of that. But it is one of the series I'm dedicated to maintaining a compelling storyline. It's actually quite unique in the sense that it's the first comic series I did where there has been some vocal demand for it to have a happy ending (from the victim's POV). Unfortunately it'll be some wait before the readers find out.
TOTAL CONTROL was another gamble, but it seems to have paid off very well. I thought a blackmail-based comic was what's been missing in DOFantasy for a very long time.
Anyway keep those comments coming. As the old-timers on this forum know, you never know when suggestions/comments will help shape my next comic.
Well there are two primary elements that make Total Control work. First off, the audience is very much aware what Kate is thinking by all the exposition. It's actually similar to reading a book with lots and lots of illustration. But she's always stating what's not necessarily obvious from an image, while the images show what isn't as easily told.
The second is that Kate clearly has actual relations and opinions of the other blackmailed women, not just her captors. You've got her "watchdog" and keeper Nina who acts as a guild to Kate's new role. Then there's the empathy Kate feels for Dr. Susan and her daughter Bianca. In Susan's case even turning into a perversely comforting lesbian twist on their helpless situations.
Both aspects go along with a common theme of the victim's perspective. They make total control's unique approach work very well.
I had no idea Dead Shark was something of a disappointment in terms of sales, Fernando, I would have thought that series would be very popular. It's certainly one of my favorites.
I'd be the third person here who's surprised. Still, Dead Shark is definitely different. I guess you can't win gambles every time.
I'm been thinking a bit related to Cheerleaders. You mentioned you weren't sure how the series might end. Well, I've come up with some ideas how it might get there. Ironically I think you've already figured out the pre-ending act given your previous comments. But here's my ideas.
Let's assume the series was wrapped up over the course of two remaining comics. The second to last comic could easily cover the transport of these prisoners, recent and experienced alike, across the border. It's safe to say Assbuster and Dogface will at least smuggle their larger "catch" across to Mexico. (A life or death scenario for the kidnappers.) Another option could be Dogface and Assbuster meeting up mid-trip. That way "training" the new cheerleaders starts mid-transport.
It's also possible to have no.9 follow a similar line to no.7 with everyone already across the boarder. Maybe not as interesting compared to being on the run. It also misses how Assbuster deals with Quinn and the foil's last "pleasure." But more attention could be given to the breaking of the new group just as the sister pair where broken in.
Personally, my vote would be for scenario one. There's still Quinn to be dealt with following the man's last "reward." They might need Velasco's influences to reach Mexico with so many girls and law enforcement on their tail. The drug lord also has to establish his new brothel ready for fresh women. These three aspects are ripe to mix story with perversion and brutality. Either approach allows the girls to be forced into humiliating situations with other women they know. (Be the relationship social or blood ties.)
Either approach also places the experienced cheerleaders in mentor situations when training this new batch. Especially the adult Lorena as "leverage" against fellow adult Svensson. Even Assbuster or Rosa will need an edge to force the defiant cheer-leading coach against her own students. Lorena/Chris have been thoroughly broken in. (As the mother's stated more than once.) Ideal "tools" for the duo kidnappers during the trip or shortly upon arrival. Same goes for the Anna/Dawn pair already in Mexico. Potentially at the brothel itself. Neither slave pair would refuse.
I emphasize Lorena because neither slave trainer has it easy here. Svensson as we know her is a much less submissive woman than Chris's mother. Dogface didn't require much effort to use daughter as a way to break in mother.
The relationship between teacher and students is different. While just as caring, there's a separation the coach can use to greater resistance. Maybe Assbuster or Rose could force it with enough pain. But the far more effective method is to use one adult to get under another's skin more effectively.
The approach creates great shocker situations from Svensson as Lorena "willingly" commits insane acts upon her and her students. Lorena hasn't broken entirely, but there's no way she or Chris would refuse given the right promises or incentive. (Threatening to permanently separate the two would do just that. Of course, just because the two are together wouldn't make their future of servitude any less perverse.)
I'll be interested to see if Dogface keeps Lorena/Chris for real or ends up selling them. It's a tough call because he clearly has sentiment for his pleasure pet "family." But the cruel perv isn't about to put his own life or safety ahead of theirs. He removed one because police where on his tail during Dreadful Reunion. Dogface is as safe as he'll ever be after/if he smuggles his "family" across the boarder. Velasco has more than enough for the brothel with Anna, Dawn, Svensson and the others. Living in a Mexican villa with his slave family?.. Prime retirement from the former gasman's perspective.
P.S. I'll admit some personal preference in the last two paragraphs. I'm not cruel, so there's an element of mercy in keeping Lorena/Chris and Anna/Dawn together. At least for me, it's easier to enjoy the perversion when these women keeping some aspect of their former lives. It goes without saying, the fact I read in Fanadox says nothing about my real life views and morals. Sex slavery is fetish fiction. Family is a real life moral.

I'll look at purchasing Dark Vengeance 3. I've never been a fan of their father being present. But who knows with this latest edition. I wouldn't count on an instant continuation though. Fernando has made if clear he likes to series hop. Changing narratives so no single scenario becomes boring. It becomes difficult otherwise to keep the situations imaginative and narrative inspired.

Pleading doesn't do a lot of good. Not when everyone is doing so for every comic series. It just becomes a source of confusion for Fernando. My own vote has already been placed. But what an author chooses to draw is entirely his/her own decision. (At least which series to draw next anyway.) I offset the wait by having many other free-time hobbies besides BDSM comics. These images satisfy the occasional fetish fantasy and nothing more. I'm a fan of Fernando's work because he combines perversion with actual narrative weight.
The best thing you can do is provide good and throught out feedback. Authors love it when their audience comments about what they've created. Not just random lists, but actual careful observation.

Feel free to step down from your soapbox. I trust in Fernando's ability to not become "confused" by a fan's request.
